Cairo, 1912. Several decades have passed since the Sudanese mystic al-Jahiz opened the gate between the magical and earthly worlds, letting jinn into everyday life... and disappeared. Now Egypt is a superpower where magic and technology coexist, and the colonial ambitions of other countries are held in check by new forces. A secret brotherhood has focused on the history and search for artefacts related to al-Jahiz. One day, members of the brotherhood are mysteriously murdered. Fatima, the youngest agent of the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Beings, known for her keen intuition, impeccable style and ability to solve the most complicated cases, is called in to investigate the crime. Together with her extraordinary lover and new quick-witted partner, Fatima unravels a web of evidence and secrets to catch the mysterious stranger and find out: has al-Jahiz really returned, or is this just a dangerous impostor seeking to sow chaos?
