Concrete New York

Exploring the Big Apple's finest concrete and Brutalist landmarks across all five boroughs

This book is a comprehensive guide to New York City's Brutalist and concrete architecture, documenting more than 50 buildings across the five boroughs through original photography by Jason R. Woods and insightful text by Allison C. Meier. Spanning the experimental postwar decades through to the present, it explores how concrete transformed New York's architectural landscape. The selection brings together internationally recognised landmarks, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, TWA Flight Center, MetLife Building and Marcel Breuer's former Whitney Museum, with lesser-known but equally compelling works such as the Church of the Crucifixion, Bronx Community College, Stephen Wise Towers Playground Horses, the Spring Street Salt Shed and Battery Harris at Fort Tilden. Housing, museums, churches, libraries, infrastructure, universities and public spaces are considered alongside contemporary buildings by Studio Gang, David Adjaye, Steven Holl and others, revealing the phenomenal breadth of New York's concrete architecture. Designed as both an architectural guide and an engaging work of reference, Concrete New York will appeal to architects, designers, historians, students and visitors seeking a deeper understanding of the city's built environment.
